Hi Phil, one One Summer we really like your debut solo album, "The Swimmer". First, how are you?

Hi One Summer. I’m glad you like the record and I’m fine thanks.
 
How would you describe your music?

I can attempt to describe the music on The Swimmerfor you. I moved out of London and back up to Yorkshire where I’m from a few years ago and began writing music on my computer. I finally taught myself how to swim properly at around the same time and started to think I could use swimming as a metaphor or concept which could bind some of my musical ideas together. So I’d describe the music on The Swimmeras propulsive, rhythmic, minimal, based on repeating patterns, focused, calm, robust, tender, detailed, meditative, a bit dark and ambivalent but ultimately uplifting and hopefully positive for people to listen to. 

On One Summer we love Cinematic Orchestra, especialy "Ma Fleur", is there a new album comming soon?  

I’m really proud of the contribution I made to Ma Fleurand all the work I’ve done with the Cinematic Orchestra. Ma Fleurwas ultimately a very rewarding album to work on. Once I’d made the decision (after co-composing the Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingoes score) to make The Swimmer it quickly became apparent I was focusing all my energy on it, and that it was the right time for me to take a break from the Cinematic Orchestra. I left on good terms with Jason but I don’t have any details regarding the new TCO release for the above reason.  

I am, however, really pleased that The Swimmerhas been well received and I’ve learnt a lot from the entire process. Hopefully more people will continue to discover it. I also completed a commission for the Sensoria Festival in Sheffield recently scoring some Mitchell and Kenyon films from the BFI archive, which I really enjoyed, and hopefully they will be up on the BFI player soon.  

 
What artists have influenced you?

I am influenced and inspired by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Steve Reich, James Brown, Philip Glass, Brian Eno, Robert Wyatt, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Alice Coltrane, John Carpenter, Led Zeppellin, Bernard Herrman, Ennio Morricone, Wayne Shorter, John Barry, Mogwai, Elvin Jones, Paul Motian, Tony Allen, Joni Mitchell, Charlie Haden, Portishead, Public Enemy, Radiohead, Neil Young, Chic, Boards of Canada, Bjork, Clark, John Hopkins, Aphex Twin, Talking Heads, Prince, Scott Walker, Vangelis, Walter/Wendy Carlos, James Blake, Sebastian Tellier, Rotary Connection, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Ruts, The Smiths, Elbow, Durutti Column, 808 State, Mr Scruff. I think I’d better stop there.       

 
What are you listening at the moment?

There were some really strong releases when I put my album out at the end of 2013 and 2014 has been incredible, some fantastic work around at the moment.  I’m listening to tracks by Caribou, Aphex Twin, Mogwai, East India Youth, Bill Ryder-Jones, GoGo Penguin, Dark Sky and Steve Reich. I’m also looking forward to checking out some Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve.

Hi Andrea ! On One Summer, we really like your new album "Isle of Magic". First how are you ?

I am pretty cool! Cheers. Working on new productions and spending some time outside when it’s sunny...unfortunately not often here in Berlin but i’ll be on vacation in Italy soon.

Where are you from ?

I am from Cesena, Italy but i moved to Berlin 5 years ago.

The project Mop Mop is born around 2002 when i was living and studying in Bologna.

What does "Mop Mop" mean ?

When i was in Bologna i came across an old dictionary of jazz , ‘Nestor Ortiz Oderigo, Dictionary Of Jazz’ from 1961 if i remember fine and i discovered the word Mop Mop for the first time. The dictionary says ‘Mop Mop...a bastard performance of modern jazz based on riffs looped till monotony...’ Well a part of the ‘monotony’, we were doing pretty much the same, i mean jamming on riffs, creating hypnotic grooves and doing solos.

James Brown and Fela Kuti know what i am talking about (eheh).

Moreover ‘Mop Mop’ is the name of a Max Roach (one of my favourite drummers and musician) composition. It was the right name in my opinion.

How would you describe your music ?

Well i guess it is a mix of tropical sounds, funk, afro with a touch of Italian Jazz. Mop Mop is a quite articulated and expensive project as we are real musicians playing real instruments using analog equipment as well. Of course is my own project and i spend most of my time in this production and taking care about all the things but working with my friends is a very important part too.

What artists have influenced you ?

Wow too many! Duke Ellington, Piero Umiliani, John Coltrane, James Brown, Armando Trovajoli, Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, Funkadelic, Bill Evans, Mulatu Astatke, Chet Baker just to name a few.

Talking about nowadays music i dig Matthew Herbert, Flying Lotus, Madlib, Air, Prince just to name a few. 

How did the collaboration with Anthony Joseph take place ? How did you meet him ?

I came across Anthony Joseph’s music some years ago. I really loved his style and i decided to sent him some demos. Anthony loved the idea so i invited him to join us here in Berlin for a studio session. We recorded three tracks for the new album. It was pretty easy to work with him because the energy was very good and we have the same feeling for the music.

Now we are friends and Anthony join us also for the live too.

What are you listening to at the moment ?

I am listening to a lot of world music, electronic productions from Techno to Ambient and jazz

Comment est née ta passion pour la musique ?

J'étais très influencée par la Motown,  la soul a l'époque de mon enfance :  The Jackson 5, The Sylistics, Gladys Knight, Tom Jones et puis ensuite vers les chanteurs de pop et les singer-songwriter comme Barry Manilow et puis tout ce qui était musique de Broadway/ Theatre Musicale. Plus tard j'ai découvert le folk.

Quels sont les artistes qui t'ont profondément marqué ?

Michael Jackson, Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, Neil Young en solo, Olivia Newton-John des annees 70s, Karen Carpenter, Barry Manilow, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Yes, Genesis, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel et The Police!

Tu vis en France , née en Floride, as- tu les deux nationalités ; française et américaine ?

Non, je n'ai que la nationalité américaine mais une carte de sejour en France.

Pour ceux qui ne te connaissent pas, je rappelle que tu as collaboré sur l' album 'Moon Safari' de Air en 1998 , tu as coécrit et tu chantes sur deux magnifiques titres , comment s'est passé à l'époque ta rencontre avec Nicolas et Jean-Benoît ?

Merci... ça s'est passé d'une manière très naturelle. Ils ont entendu une de mes maquettes en passant chez le producteur Etienne Worsigner , lorsque je suis repassée il y avait Nicolas qui m'attendait pour me parler de leur album.

Comment as - tu vécu le phénoménal succès de 'Moon Safari' ?

Je suis bien reconnaissante d'avoir participé à cet album qui a tellement marqué les gens, c'est un vrai honneur. Nos chansons m'ont ouvert la porte pour plein d'autres featurings à travers les années et même aujourd'hui.

Tu as également collaboré avec un artiste que nous aimons beaucoup sur One Summer , Fred Avril, sur son album 'That horse must be starving' , c'était une belle rencontre également ?

J'ai rencontré Fred grâce a Marc Collin et puisque j'étais très fan de Fred ça m'a fait plaisir qu'ils me proposent de participer à sa chanson.

As-tu l'impression d'appartenir à cette famille de musicien " électronique " ?

Je crois que j'ai fait partie de la "French Touch" dans les années 90 mais vu que je me suis installé aux Etats-Unis presque pendant dix ans (aux années 2000) - plus vraiment maintenant. En plus, puisque la marche a tellement change ces dernieres annees il n'y a plus le même genre de contact humain dans le milieu comme autrefois. Il me semble qu'il ne reste que les enregistrements (en studio) avec les équipes et le live surtout qui peuvent  donner une sensation de famille. Le contact humain aujourd'hui se trouve dans les reseaux sociaux aussi comme facebook, myspace, etc...

Aurais-tu envie de chanter en français ?

Oui, j'aimerais bien essayer avec les bonnes chansons et textes.

Qu'écoutes-tu en ce moment ?

J'ai découvert il n' y a pas longtemps l'album "Walking On A Dream" par le groupe 'Empire of The Sun' et l'ecoute en boucle. Je les adore!

Quels sont tes projets ? Prépares-tu un nouvel album ? Nous sommes impatients :)

Ca ne fait pas longtemps que je suis revenue (en France) et je fais des enregistrements actuellement en Angleterre et en Irlande. Je vous tiens au courant de nouvelles sorties :) L’année dernière j'ai fait 3 featurings; Love Will Turn Your Head Around (de Karmacoda avec Anji Bee et moi), Northern Sky de Rosita Kess et Traveling Minds d'Umbi.

As- tu des dates de concerts prévus bientôt ?

On a fait un petit concert a l’université Central Saint Martin a Londres pour l'inauguration de leur nouvelle residence a King's Cross et je planifie quelques dates aux printemps.

J'ai découvert récemment ta très belle reprise de ' Everybody loves the sunshine ' , c'est un titre parfait pour notre programmation ;) Nous diffusons également ton duo ' Northern Sky' avec Rosita Kèss que nous aimons beaucoup , aimeriez-vous chanter de nouveau ensemble ?

J'adore Rosita et sa musique , nous envisageons de  faire de nouveaux titres ensemble. Quant a Matt Winn (D*Note) on a récemment co-écrit une chanson qui s'appelle "Still Believe" avec Matt Cooper (d'Incognito) qui va faire partie de mon prochain album.

On One Summer , we really like your music .The first time I heard you, it was a video from " Falling Down " , I immediately loved . First, how are you ?

Oh thank you , im good thanks ! , summer here in New Zealand but its raining a lot so not much beach time yet

You were born in New Zealand , have you lived there ?

I was born in Montreal Canada , i grew up in Wellington New Zealand and have lived here ( in New Zealand ) most of my life except for prolonged stays in Berlin

Who are the artists that you're influenced by ?

So many artists ! , i really like Miles Davis , Wayne Shorter , John Coltrane , Elvin Jones , Tony Williams , Sonic Youth , Cal Tjader , The Beatles ,J Dilla all the Brainfeeder artists , Stones Throw roster.... so many

Your second album , Glimpse , will be released soon , we look forward to listening to . How would you describe this new album ?

Glimpse is stylistically different from my previous record pins and digits , it is deeper in terms of listening and has more variation of tempo and sound , more hazy , etherial denser texturally , more a listening record than a dj record i think

You often work with Ladi 6 , an artist that we like , can you tell us more about her collaboration on this new album ?

I am a member of the Ladi 6 group (playing drums and samples),so we work together all the time . She is such an amazing artist ; it was a huge honor for her to guest on my record .

How did you join BBE ? Do you feel close to the others BBE artists ?

I joined BBE from a recommendation from Dj Vadim who was signed to the label at the time , i am first and foremost a fan of the label , the compilations and the beat generation series in particular have resonated with me personally and artistically for many years , i very happy to be part of a such a strong stable of artists.

What aspect of making music excites you the most ?

The first aspect of beat making or song writing excites me the most , its like a honey moon period , your so excited and energized but what you have just created than you can barely sit still , the final touches, editing and mixing aren't is much fun .

Can we expect to see you out on the road for any concerts in France soon ? We would like to see you in Bordeaux !

I will be based in berlin again from may onwards so would love to come and do some more shows in France, especially Bordeaux , you guys have the best wine !

What are you listening right now ?

Fingers typing on laptop , city hum , rain on the roof , heart beating

Son pseudonyme n'a rien à voir avec le célèbre jeu de société , il est inspiré des claviers Korg des années 80 . Artiste important de la scène électronique , Charles de son vrai nom a signé cette année sur le label de Flying Lotus Brainfeeder . Il apparait aussi sur différentes compilations Warp et Planet Mu.  Nous avons rencontré ce créateur de paysages sonores .

Where are you from ?

I'm from Bakersfield, California. It's about 100 miles or so north of Los Angeles.

Who are the artists that you're influenced by?

I have many but some of the biggest ones for me growing up were Led Zeppelin, Timbaland and Jean Luc Ponty. The way they structured their music influenced me the most. All three had their own sound but with Led Zeppelin and Timbaland, they were able to always change their style.

'Spring Crossings' is one of my favorite tracks. This is the perfect music to relax to. Is there a specific story behind it?

Spring Crossings used to have drums behind it and something told me to strip the drums and add a natural ambience instead. This track actually seems to represent the spring equinox. Spring Crossings is also the crossover into the airy realms of the LP. If you listen to Spring Crossings its like a baby bird flying from the nest - then after that In The Air starts and now we're flying and it's also associated with the heart. I also felt it was right to make something that reflected spring since it seems to be a time when I'm feeling more creative.

You joined the record label Brainfeeder this year, I want to ask you how the collaboration with Flying Lotus is taking place?

It's going well. I like much of the music coming from that label so I'm really glad to be apart of it. Steve (Flying Lotus) seems to be open to my ideas and my music so that's good. Right now I've been working with Strangeloop, another artist on the label. He has a project coming out called ANAMNESIA, it's a short film that I'm doing the musical score for. I don't really want to give away what happens in the film, all I gotta say is I'm really happy to be a part of it - it's right up my alley. (For more information on Anamnesia, see here)

I've read that you are preparing the release of a new album. Could you talk a little bit about that?

Right now I'm working on putting out a 7" (EP) around springtime. I've been working on some new material and I have some unreleased tracks as well. I also have an LP that will be coming out around late summer (2012) that I'm still in the process of making. I'm focusing more on my lighter melodic side- but the album may turn into something completely different, you never know.

Can we expect to see you out on the road for any concerts in France?

Yes! I would love to come back to France and play again - I'll most likely be back for the 2012 tour. The last time I was there, one of the spots I played was in Strasbourg. I spilled beer on my Macbook and crashed it at the end of my set- but I was so hyped I didn't even let it bother me. I thought my computer was done for because it was filled with beer but I did some affirmations and dried it by hanging it upside down, and it worked again- hahaha. Normatrouf was great as well, the people were really into it

What are you listening to at present?

I've been listening to a lot of Fleetwood Mac, SebastiAn, Current Value and Micachu and The Shapes.

Allô! I'm so happy that you enjoy my song! I am doing great today, it's a beautiful day today!

Where are you from ?

I am originally from Southern California, Huntington Beach city to be exact. Huntington Beach is known as "Surf City USA"!

You've worked the song " Dirty Secrets " with Robin Hannibal , founding member of "Quadron" and" Boom Clap Bachelors" , can you tell us about your meeting with Robin ?

So this is a bit of a long story! But I'll make it short. I met Robin through my brother Chris. My brother is a director and also 1/2 of the directing team known as Walter Robot. Chris was assigned to do the Quadron video "Slippin" and eventually introduced me to Robin. Well, Robin and I met, sparks flew and we fell in love. Later down the line we collaborated on some music projects together !

Do you work on another songs already ?

Robin and I have collaborated on several songs together, but at this point only one song beside "Dirty Secrets" is close to being completed. We have enough to put together an album but we've both been so busy that we haven't had the time to work on them. Eventually I'll get around to releasing a full album of songs.

What are you listening to at present ?

I'm constantly listening to different things all the time! But recently I've been listening to a lot of Angie Stone (the best of), Caetano Veloso (several different albums), Liam Finn (fomo), SebastiAn (total), Sebastien Tellier (sexuality), Feist (metals), Benjamin Biolay (la superbe)--as you can see I really enjoy French music! And I didn't put all those French artists on purpose, France just produces some really great music!

Le DJ français vient de sortir un des albums les plus attendus de la rentrée électronique .  Après des débuts remarqués sur F Com ( label de Laurent Garnier et Eric Morand)  en 2001 avec le duo The Youngsters, il alterne des sets à travers le monde et des sorties de maxis. "Bittersweet " propose 11 titres tech-house, deep et psychédéliques, la bande-son parfaite pour prolonger  l'été .

Nous avons beaucoup aimé ton album, nous diffusons tes titres sur One Summer, tout d'abord comment vas-tu ?

Je vais bien, et vous remercie pour le soutien.

Sur ton album tu as travaillé avec  Bruno Hovart ( Mr President )  , que nous aimons aussi beaucoup , comment s'est passé votre rencontre ?

La rencontre s'est faîte par le biais de Raphaël Chambouvet et Rémy Kaprielan ( pianiste et batteur du trio CHK et Mr Day) avec qui je travaillais déjà à l'époque. C'est à la suite d'un concert que je partageais avec ces mêmes musiciens que la rencontre avec Bruno s'est concrétisée, et que nous avons commencé à créer.

Tu as été bercé dans la musique très tôt, quel est ton premier souvenir musical ?

Oh, il me faudrait certainement une séance d'hypnose pour arriver à vous répondre avec précision et si c'est pour que Dorothée ressorte il vaudrait mieux éviter.

 Y a t il un album ou une chanson  qui a changé ta vie ?

Changé ma vie!, non je ne crois pas, mais quand j'entendais Aretha Franklin chanter "Bridge over trouble water" sur le "live at Fillmore West" , j'étais à chaque fois profondément touchée, scotchée comme liée à cette chanson et à cette émotion vocale, et ça a certainement eu un impact.

Quels sont les disques  que tu écoutes en ce moment ?  Ta bande- son idéale de l'été ?

En ce moment et en fait comme à mon habitude, selon l'humeur du jour je vacille entre Folk, hip hop, reggae, musique africaine, soul, ça passe de Ray Lamontagne, the Sand Band à NERD, Black Spade, Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones, Cody Chesnutt, Pamelo Mounk'a et Fela Kuti, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu... la liste est longue. Et j'ai la chance d'avoir en ma possession les titres du nouvel album de Mr Day prévu pour Janvier 2012 et je me régale.

As tu des dates de concerts prévus bientôt ? 

Les concerts reprendront à l'automne. Concernant les semaines à venir, au menu, vacances et farniente.

Pouvez- vous nous parler de votre rencontre avec la chanteuse Anqui  ?

 Fred Spider :J'étais  DJ Résident dans un club appellé le Diobar a Barcelone, et un jour nous avons reçu Anqui qui chantait, j'ai adoré sa voix. Il y a d'ailleurs un link de sa prestation au club....

La vidéo  qui accompagne le single a été tourné à Barcelone , l'avez- vous réalisé vous même  ?

 Don Pascal :  J'ai filmé la plus grande partie des images a Cape Town avec Fred, puis le reste a Barcelone. Puis j'ai fait le montage a Barcelone avec une professionnelle, Paula Guastella. 

Le titre sort en vinyl, un support cher aux labels comme Jazz'n Milk , à titre personnel, possédez- vous une importante collection ? 

Fred Spider : Je crois que l'on peut dire qu'entre Pascal et moi meme, nous possédons environ 20000 disques, entre jazz, soul, funk, afro, reggae, house, hip-hop, nu-jazz, broken beat.....

Don Pascal : Je dois approcher les 12000 dont plus de la moitié en vinyle, donc au total nous cumulons certainement plus de 20000. Nous continuons a acheter du vinyle et je suis vraiment heureux que notre EP puisse sortir sur ce support. Le son du vinyle n'a pas d'équivalent pour les vrais amateurs. Il y a vraiment un abime entre le son du vinyle et un MP3, spécialement  sur un sound-system de club. Aujourd'hui c'est le règne de la quantité et de la portabilité au détriment de la qualité du son et de la sélectivité des tracks. Bien sûr il devient de plus en plus  dur de voyager avec des sacs de vinyles, mais lorsque je découvre un DJ qui mixe encore avec ce support, il y a tout de suite respect, sauf s'il s'agit d'un branchouille qui fait ça pour le style et ne fait pas le poids en tant que DJ. Mais si je devais transmettre un message au jeunes DJs, ce serait : oubliez les formats compressés, et par respect pour les artistes et les producteurs, mixez au moins avec des fichiers WAVE ou AIFF. 

Qu'écoutez - vous en ce moment ? Votre bande-son idéale de la rentrée ?

Fred Spider : Je suis a fond sur le retour du Swing, je vis a Cape Town et cela cartonne ici. 

Don Pascal : De retour de Colombie, j'écoute beaucoup de Salsa Colombienne en ce moment : Joe Arroyo, Grupo Niche, Guayacan... Toujours beaucoup de Broken Beat, le style musical le plus sous-estimé de l'histoire de la musique urbaine a mon avis. De la House et de la Rumba Congolaise. 

Y a t- il une chanson ou un album qui a changé votre vie ?

Fred Spider : Je peux dire que "The Cat" de Jimmy Smith m'a encouragé a jouer de l'orgue Hammond, apres je jouais deja du piano depuis quelques années....

Don Pascal : Il y eu d'abord quelques disques de mon père, dont "The Cat" de Jimmy Smith, "The Isaac Hayes Movement" avec le titre "I stand accused" qui m'a fait comprendre très jeune les fondamentaux de la musique noire, Erroll Garner, pianiste de Jazz incroyablement sous-estimé.  Puis a 15 ans j'ai découvert "Electric Ladyland" de Hendrix, grosse claque, et surtout "What's Going On" de Marvin Gaye qui m'a définitivement propulsé dans la Soul et la musique noire en général, sachant par ailleurs que ma ville natale, Toulouse, était très Funk a l'époque de mon adolescence et que ce genre fait partie de mes gênes.

From Bossa Nova to American pop to a French chansonnier, Rosita Kèss finds the thread, weaving her honeyed alto through twelve original songs on this tuneful international album. Originally from Venice, Italy, Rosita Kèss gypsy aura led her to Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, and London before finding a groove in New York City where she is currently working with some of the most well-respected musicians in folk and jazz.

Hi Rosita, i really appreciate your music.  Where do you come from ?

I was born in Venice, Italy, from an italian father and an english mother.

How would you describe your music ?

 I describe my music "Gypsy" music. It's itinerant music of who travels and move to new places a lot .I tend to absorbe the culture and the sound of all the places i see. I ve lived in many different cities since i was 13. Blues, Bossa, Reggae...i love to mix all these elements to my songs and make them part of my experience. I love how much travelling inspires me.

Northern Sky" is a duet with Beth Hirsch who has  worked  with the french band Air ,I guess it was a good experience ?

When i was 20 a friend gave me "Early Days" (Beth Hirsch's solo record). It s been one of the most inspiring records for me. Since then i ve been thinking of a collaboration with Beth. I finally wrote the right song; i was in my bedroom in Brooklyn and i "gave life" "Northern Sky". I immidietely thought of Beth. I sent it to her and she loved it. Working with Beth has been a wonderful experience. After that she came to see me in New Orleans (where  i m based now) and we had a really beautiful deep and soulful connection.

Did you listen  to electronic music ?

I do listen to electronic music. Lamb is one of my favorite bands since i was 19. Also Tricky, Massive Attack,Brazilian Girls, Cinematic Orchestra and of course A.I.R. I m thinking of collaborating with some of these artists for my new record. New Orleans music mixed to electronic music...is it crazy enough?

Are you on the road for any concerts ?

I' ll be on the road this summer to promote my record "Northern Sky"  and i ll play around Rome,Venice, Barcelona, Nancy,  Frieburg, Paris.   www.rositakess.com  Here you can find my dates.

Hi ! I really appreciate you album "The Break Of Dawn" where do you come from ?

Hi, I live in a city just South of Tokyo and very close to the Pacific. I spent a lot of my boyhood near the beach.

How would you describe your music ?

I love the rhythm of dance music like Hip Hop and the harmony of Jazz and Bossa Nova. Simultaneously, I treat beautiful melody as an especially important thing. I'm not sure which genre my music is in but my songs are created from these roots.

 Who are the artists you're influenced by ?

Cole Porter, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Joe Pass, D'angelo, J Dilla, Quincy Jones, Tchaikovsky, Flying Lotus, Janelle Monae and of course more....

 What are you listening to at present ?

Hello  .  We love " Discuits  " , it's on our playlist right now . First of all, how are you ?

Thank you very much! It always brings a smile to our faces to know our music is being appreciated, thankyou for your support :0). At the moment we are in our London studio missing the sunshine but working on our album, so we are doing well thankyou :)

Can you tell us about Poussez  ?

Poussez comprises Jafar & Maxime Cescau, we have both been in the music industry since the mid 1990s, djing, producing etc. We started producing together as Poussez and running our own label Artizan Music back in 2004, since then its been  a constant graft of parties, releases, remixing, label work, touring, podcasts, drinking and laughing. Laughing is good.

Who are the artists you're influenced by ?

Thats a hard question as our tastes range from old disco, boogie and funk, to classic techno or modern deep house. Its so hard to name a list without seeming cliched, of course Metro Area, Greg Wilson, Ben Watt or Jimpster are modern influences, but then so are stalwart techno heads like Hardfloor, Jeff Mills or Dave Clarke. Like many, our sound is the culmination of all these years absorbing music; Those early days listening to djs like Carl Cox, Sven Vath and Laurent Garnier are as much an influence as say the current tech-house sound of Joris Voorn and Nic Fanciulli, or the wealth of great music coming out of Europe (liebe detail, cecille, innervisions, cadenza etc). We would say that a particular labels vision is as much an influence..Crosstown Rebels, Mobilee, Permanent Vacation, Connaisseur, Champion Standard, Freerange etc..

What are your plans for the coming months ?

We are at time of interview (May 2011) finishing off around 18 new tracks. We have particular labels in mind for those. We are also starting our first Artist album and have many sessions lined up with vocalists, keyboardists, rappers and other live musicians. We're excited about the results, as this isn't the first time we have collaborated with other artists or session musicians (previous collabs include work with Demarkus Lewis, Rich Medina, Marcus Begg and the lovely Hannah Khemoh from the reel people and roxy music (!), she will definately be featuring on the album). Both of us are massively interested in Space, sci-fiction etc so the album is supposed to reflect that; an electronic narrative of inner and outer space..

What are you listening to at present ?

At this very moment its a nu-disco track we are locked into. In terms of other artists absolutely loving Michael Mayer's amazing remix of Who Made Who's 'Every Minute Alone'. Makam's album was cool a few months ago..To be very honest with you though, we havent left the studio in months. the beards are getting long!

I'm well, thank you! My wife and I have just had our first baby a week ago so we're just trying to get used to a life of little sleep!


Where do you come from?

I'm from Glasgow originally but live in Manchester, and Chris lives in Liverpool, although he's from Birmingham.


Who are the artists you're influenced by ? 

That's a tricky question to answer in some ways, as I'm sure if you asked Chris and I each to do a list of our favourite artists, there would be a lot of different artists on each list. Artists we both like, and are influenced by, are people like Steely Dan and John Martyn, Brian Eno, lots of vintage Detroit / Chicago producers, Theo Parrish, Metro Area.... The list is a long one! 


Lately,  you were invited for a mix  for Gilles Peterson . I guess it was a good experience ?

We are both really big fans of Gilles' show and have been for years, so when we were asked to do the mix for the international edition of his show, we were delighted! I think it shows we are heading in the right direction when people like Gilles pick up on what we are doing and support us.


Can we expect to see you out on the road for any concerts in France ?
We'll welcome you with good wine in Bordeaux ;)

We both like good wine, so I'm sure a trip to Bordeaux would be a good one! At the moment, we have no French shows 100% confirmed, but there is a chance that we might be doing a gig in Nice in 3 or 4 months from now, we're just waiting for confirmation.



What are your plans for the coming months ?

Well, with the arrival of my baby, it means Chris and I will have less studio time together than in the past, but we have a number of releases coming out on labels such as Delusions of Grandeur and Instruments of Rapture, as well as the third release on our Use of Weapons label. We are also starting to get a lot more dj gig offers both in the UK and in Europe, so we will be out on the road regularly too.

What are you listening to at present ?

I'm loving the Vakula remix of Steve Reich that has just come out on vinyl and have also just bought all the 12" releases on a US label called Future Times - seriously good stuff! John Martyn's Glorious Fool album is sounding good on my iPod right now.

Rencontre avec Deborah Jordan .

Après The Light en 2009 , Deborah Jordan a sorti il y a peu son deuxième album   What You See   qui  mélange  jazz, soul et  downtempo .

On One Summer Radio, we really like your songs . First of all, how are you ?

I'm great, thanks! And glad to have connected with One Summer Radio - thanks for inviting me to join you and for supporting my music.


Where do you come from ?

I'm based in the UK but I'm half English and half Italian.
It's a blessing as I have been working with a band in Italy called Live Tropical Fish who are based in the same town as my family, so I get to see them when we rehearse/perform, it's wonderful.



What kind of themes do you like to use in your songs ?

I'm very open when I'm writing - I try to let the music dictate the lyrical content of the song, to get the feel of what the music is trying to say and then find the words to express that. There are universal themes that you can't really avoid when writing - love and being hurt in love being the main ones - but then there are so many ways to talk about love and other common experiences. It's one of the unifying factors of music I think - sharing those common experiences through songs that you connect with. I just try to be as honest and sincere as I can be when writing as it has to come from the heart to connect with the person listening.


Can we expect to see you out on the road for any concerts in France ?

I would love to come and perform in France - it's been a while! And your invitation sounds too good to refuse ;-)
I'm working on plans to be able to thank those that have supported the music by touring and performing live so hopefully yes. I'm also working on a project this year with a wonderful French producer so hopefully that will create even more opportunity to make it happen. It's very exciting!

What are your plans ? Do you work on another album already ?

I'm working on various projects at the moment. I prefer to keep working and writing most of the time as I'm constantly learning and evolving and it's great to be able to put that into the music. At the moment the main priorities are to finish the second Sun Circle album - and I have to say Simon S has created some incredible music for me to write to so I'm very excited about that album!! I'm also guesting on the next Marc Rapson EP and working on a collaboration EP with a wonderful young British producer and an album with a US producer - so it's quite busy!!!

What are you listening to at present ? What is on your ipod ?

There's too much on my iPod so it always takes me ages to choose what to listen to! I've just got the new Kurt Elling and Radiohead albums so I'm listening to those quite a lot...It's great having a partner who's a dj as there's a constant soundtrack to each day!! He's been playing a lot of Yusef Lateef, Erykah Badu, Madlib, Leroy Hutson lately so it's never boring!  I always listen to a lot of Bill Evans, especially Symbiosis - it's such an incredible work of art. I'm also listening to the tracks I have to write to alot to try to get inside them and find that inspiration!

Did you listen to any French music ?

I do.....I love Electric Conversation with whom I collaborated on their first  album.   They've each made their own projects under various guises since that album. I love their originality and vibe as they feel as passionately about music as I do and you can hear that  in  their music. They're also beautiful spirits.

Rencontre avec Leaving Atlantis : Signe Gry Thorup et Vesa Haapanen  sont  originaires  respectivement   de Copenhague et Helsinki . Ils sortiront prochainement leur premier album Strange New World

Where do you come from ?

We come from Copenhagen and Helsinki, but mostly work in London.
Currently shooting a video in London for the song Solitaire.

Can you tell us about Leaving Atlantis ?

We are an upcoming duo with, to say it ourselves, a very unique sound that we have been developing over the last 2 years,
Signe is the lyric writing beautiful voiced vocalist and Vesa is the multi instrumentalist/producer geek.

Who are the artists you're influenced by ?

Imogen Heap, Zero 7, Air, Massive Attack, Sade, Tina Dico, Kate Bush, Bjork, Jon Brion Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel,...and Signe is a dedicated Prince fan. Vesa is more in to Jimi Hendrix and AC/DC, though you can only hear glimpses of this in our sound,hopefully the best ones?

What are your plans for this year ?

To release our debut album in the beginning of the year and promote it ourselves the best we can. First single release will be our song Solitaire together with quite a few interesting remixes. We're also planning to work on the follow up to our debut Strange New world. At the same time we are very keen to put together a live show to display our songs.

Any words for One Summer listeners ?

Keep your ears on the ground and feet on the sky... we are coming after you with our songs!
